Managing payment methods

How to add a card, choose which one is your default, and remove a card you no longer use.

3 min read

Before you start

  • A card you want to save
  • The Billing & Balance page open from the left sidebar

Tip

Make the card you use most your default, since that is the one checkout selects for you.

Your saved cards live in the Payment Methods section of Billing and balance. This article covers adding a card, picking your default and removing one.

Adding a card

Note

The card form is provided by Stripe, our payment processor. You type your card number into their secure form, and we only ever see the brand, the last four digits and the expiration. The Add Payment Method window says so itself. "Your card details are encrypted and never stored on our servers."

Step 1. Open the Billing page

Open Billing & Balance from the sidebar and find the Payment Methods section.

Step 2. Click Add Payment Method

A window titled Add Payment Method opens, marked "Secured by Stripe".

Step 3. Fill in the card form

Enter the card details in the form.

Step 4. Click Save Card

You see "Payment method added" and the new card appears in the grid. If it is the only card on your account it becomes your default right away.

Adding a card at checkout

You can also add a card while checking out. The payment step on any order shows your saved cards with your default already selected. Click Add new payment method (or Add a payment method if you have none yet), fill in the form and click Save Card. The new card is selected for that purchase.

Choosing your default

Your default card is the one selected for you at checkout. It is marked with a Default badge.

Step 1. Hover over the card you want

Hover over any card other than your current default. A Set Default button appears on it.

Step 2. Click Set Default

The Default badge moves to the card you picked.

Removing a card

You can remove any card except your default.

Warning

Removing a card cannot be undone. It does not change an order you have already paid for. It can affect a subscription, because a subscription keeps billing the card it was set up with. If you remove that card, the next charge fails. The Troubleshooting section below covers what each subscription shows when that happens.

Step 1. Click the trash icon

Hover over the card and click the trash icon.

Step 2. Check the card named in the window

A window titled Remove Payment Method opens, naming the brand and last four digits. It warns that removing a card cannot be undone.

Step 3. Click Remove

This confirms the removal. That card will not be offered to you again.

Troubleshooting

My default card has no trash icon

Your default card cannot be removed while it is the default. Make another card the default first (hover that card and click Set Default), then remove the old one. If your default is your only card, add another one first.

A weekly lead subscription shows Retrying

The last charge did not go through. The subscription keeps billing the card it was set up with, and there is no way to change that card here, so contact support and we will move it for you.

Add or switch to a working card here, then retry the payment from the membership card. Subscriptions, pausing and cancelling has the steps.
